I have been in Laos for over 9 years now and my love for this country has only grown over this period. I originally arrived as a backpacker and never left. I first lived and worked in the town of Vang Vieng as a kayaking guide on the scenic Nam Song and Nam Lik Rivers with a local ecotourism company. From there I worked my way up to General Manager and over the course of this period, got to live in Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Pakse - a great way to see so much of Laos.
After around 3 years here, I decided to move on and helped start a Lao-owned company called Teamwork, which is a local business support company. Our most successful area is our work in the tourism industry. This includes consulting for the Stay Another Day project of the IFC-MPDF (private arm of the World Bank specializing in private sector development work in the Mekong region) and working with the Dutch Development Organization, SNV, on pro-poor sustainable tourism development in Khammouane and Savannakhet Provinces, but most importantly has lead to our participation in the whl.travel franchise.
Work is not all that keeps me here though!! I have grown deeply attached to the people, the nature and the general peaceful atmosphere that you find throughout this country. Personal interests include consuming the wonderful nectar that is Beer Lao and playing rugby - 10 international caps for Laos so far. Go Laos!
