Little Bighorn Battlefield

Little Bighorn Battlefield

Battlefields in Mountain States, United States

The Battle of Little Big Horn ended in a Native American victory for the Sioux and Cheyanne. General George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Calvary were completely destroyed in this battle, having largely underestimated the strength of the Native Americans. Today over 200 graves dot the hillside where the battle took place, a sore reminder of the bloody conflict between the whites and Native Americans. There is a Custer's Last Stand Reenactment that takes place annually in June.

Churches of Chiloé

Churches of Chiloé

Churches & Abbeys in Los Lagos, Chile

The churches of Chiloé were started by the Jesuit Peripatetic Mission in the 17th and 18th centuries and are a spectacular display of wooden architecture, protected and sheltered by the northern mountains. They have angle shaped roofs, stone foundations, and a facade tower with the cross and belfry. These unique churches illustrate the blend of native and European ideas and are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lascaux Caves

Lascaux Caves

Archaeological Sites in Aquitaine Southwest, France

The Vézère Valley in the Dordogne contains over 147 prehistoric sites and 25 decorated caves, making it one of the richest areas of prehistory in Europe. These sites date back to Paleolithic times. The Lascaux Cave is the most famous prehistoric site, rich and detailed hunting scenes - so famous, in fact, that they had to build a replica for the tourists, who are not allowed in the real thing.

Assateague Island

Assateague Island

Islands in Appalachian States, United States

Assateague Island, located off the coasts of Maryland and Virginia, is most famous for its population of wild horses. It is said that the horses are survivors from a shipwreck off of the Virginia coastline hundreds of years ago. Although this story is not validated, it is known that the colonists used Assateague Island as a place for horses and livestock to graze.

Today, the horses remain on the island and are separated into two distinct herds: one on the Maryland side of the island and the other on the Virginia side. Visitors are more than welcome to enjoy these feral animals in their natural habitat but the horses should be given plenty of space for safety measures.

Wild horses are not the only inhabitants of Assateague Island. Native white tailed deer and the sika deer which is a species of elk, also reside on the island as well as many birds and reptiles. Assateague Island is a place of unique wildlife mingling with pristine beaches and man-made structures.

Atacama Desert

Atacama Desert

Deserts in Antofagasta, Chile

Known as the driest place on earth - in some places rain has never been recorded and it's hard to believe that over 1 million people inhabit this bare landscape. Most residents live along the coast in towns like San Pedro where extinct volcanoes surround the village and inhabitants keeping them separated from the vast expanse of empty interior. Although the Atacama Desert is mostly a barren wasteland, there are still places of spectacular beauty: the Reserva Nacional Flamencos has the Chaxa Lagoon with its huge flamingo breeding colony for example. Because of the bone dry land and air, preserved artefacts from the Pre-Columbian, Incan, and Paleo-Indian cultures have been discovered.
