Romantic Summer Escapes

More sunshine and less clothing drop the pulse to a languid tick, but with romantic stalwarts like Paris and Venice sizzling and packed with tourists where can you escape to when you’re in the mood for love?

Culture definitely inspires romance. Watch great passions play out in the dusk over Lake Massaciuccoli at the Puccini Opera Festival, and feel your heart swell with those of Madame Butterfly or Tosca. Or find your own secluded villa in a quiet region of Tuscany and borrow scenes from great love story, ‘The English Patient‘. For lovers of the finer things what could be more quintessentially romantic than drinking Champagne in the courtyard of a vineyard in Champagne or in your own bungalow hut over a sparking blue ocean in Bora Bora? If you’re saving Bora Bora for your honeymoon, nearby Huahine has the same soft sandy, palm lined beaches and a rented sail boat will be even more private and allow the two of you to explore Tahiti together.

Romance doesn’t have to mean mooching over each other all day, hire a classic car and drive aptly named Romantic Road through Bavaria’s picturesque fairy tale castle region or around the Italian lakes, Garda and Como. Learn the sultry, physical language of Flamenco together in Andalusia or take your time strolling the Amalfi Coast, the backdrop of small towns climbing the cliffs as the sun sets will keep things amorous.

If your lover needs more of a visual prompt, Pink Sands Beach is literally pink and soft, Praslin in the Seychelles is known for both its remoteness and its suggestively shaped double coconuts, and Halong Bay with its tiny beaches and knife like islands has a love poem carved in vast letters into one of its cliffs. And if your lover loves logic, Vestvagoy Beach in Norway has been voted the world’s most romantic beach (and it’s the perfect time of year with all those extra balmy hours of sunshine…).
