Judy Malinowski's Big Island of Hawai'i
Snorkeling and Watersports expert Judy Malinoski knows the Big Island of Hawai'i really well - because she lives there - so she's the best possible person to recommend it. She's sharing her home town tips, or in this case home island tips, with us in our Questionnaire for Experts, Bloggers and other Travel Knowledgeables.
So if you fancy an aloha holiday start taking notes...
Where's your home town, and what's the main reason people visit?
I live on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i, which doesn't have a town, but does have spectacular beaches with views of 5 somewhat extinct volcanoes.
What's the main reason you think people SHOULD be visiting?
They should come enjoy the water -- swim, snorkel, dive, surf, kayak or just enjoy the view.
If you had to recommend to the friend of a friend one unmissable thing to do in your home town what would it be?
Snorkel or dive along our beautiful reefs.
If they had a whole day in town what would you recommend they do?
It depends on their interests. You can spend the day by the ocean, golf, tour the island or just relax in the sun.
What if they had three days?
With a car you can drive in a large circle (minimum of 8 hours) with stops along the way to wander through a botanical garden, snorkel in giant tidepools, see the lava flow after dark, visit the southernmost point in the U.S.A.
What will you never catch a local doing?
Locals don't wear suits -- at least, hardly ever. Aloha attire is nearly always fine.
What WILL you catch a local doing?
Having a party with singing, guitar or ukulele, and, of course, lots of good food.
And what local delicacies would visitors be fools not to try while they're there?
I'd go to a farmers' market for local fruits, try Kona coffee, maybe tour a macadamia nut factory or vanilla farm.
In 140 characters, how would you sum up your home town as a great destination?
There's something here for everyone and it's a beautiful environment with friendly people, who really believe in the spirit of aloha.
As well as being WR Experts, Mel and Judy write snorkeling guidebooks. After many years of snorkeling and diving all over the world, in 70-some countries from Anguilla to Zanzibar, they decided in 1994 to create the kind of authoritative guidebooks that they wished they could buy, with all first-hand reviews, detailed maps and dramatic pictures. Their company, Indigo Publications, provides a unique series of detailed guides to snorkeling in Hawai’i.
