May Festivals

Written by  larapiegeler

As the weather gets tentatively warmer in Europe, festivals are coming outdoors and swamping their host towns in colourful party atmospheres.

The Lille Festival of Flavours lays on a spread of the best French food for all to taste, learn about, copy and gush over, and the Spargelfest in Schwetzingen honours the asparagus harvest with Hollandaise sauce and golden, wax-textured salad potatoes like no others. Of course, if you lose interest in the asparagus peeling contests and the choosing of the asparagus king or queen, and can’t bear to sample another of the dishes based on that unexpectedly versatile little vegetable, you can always wander off to the concert hall and be swept away by one of the performances that comprise the annual Schwetzinger Festspiele.

There’s music to be enjoyed in St. Petersburg now, too: an array of operas, ballets and classical concerts comprises the White Nights Festival, named for this early Summer period when the sun never quite sets.

Back in the UK, you can depend on the Chelsea Flower Show for witty, cranky, space-age or just divinely pretty garden displays as well as an endless choice of plant specimens on sale to take home, and on the thrill of the Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival’s days of intellectual exploration.
