A Twenty-Something's Washington
We know our series of Questionnaires for Experts, Bloggers and other Travel Knowledgeables is useful from this statement alone, received from twenty-something traveller, and blogger at Twenty Something Travel, Stephanie Yoder. Washington, which is her home town, she says is: not just Hollywood for ugly people.
Finding out that regal Washington could be so mislabelled is all part of finding out what it's like from a local's perspective, and that includes the way people rib it. So for more home truths about Washington, read on.
Where's your hometown, and what's the main reason people visit?
My hometown is Washington DC, very popular with tourists seeking a glimpse of their government at work.
What's the main reason you think people SHOULD be visiting?
In addition to politics and history, DC is really interesting culturally and has terrific nightlife.
If you had to recommend to the friend of a friend one unmissable thing to do in your home town what would it be?
Walk around the monuments at night. All the tourists leave, and the monuments lit up against the dark sky is a truly romantic sight.
If they had a whole day in town what would you recommend they do?
With one day you have just enough time to explore the Smithsonian and the iconic buildings on the Mall.
What if they had three days?
With three days you should be able to see some of the other colorful DC neighborhoods like upscale Georgetown, free-wheeling Dupont and funky Eastern Market.
What will you never catch a local doing?
Standing on the escalator during rush hour- time to move it!
What WILL you catch a local doing?
Talking politics- unfortunately it's pretty much the only topic of conversation around here.
And what local delicacies would visitors be fools not to try while they're there?
Crepes from the Crepe Man in Eastern Market- they are marvelous!
In 140 characters, how would you sum up your home town as a great destination?
An elegant city with culture to spare, not just Hollywood for ugly people. (Ed.: You were waiting for it weren't you.)
Anything else you want to add!?
DC is more than just what you remember from your school trip in 8th grade! It's a really fun city with a lot going on, if you just give it a chance.
