The facilities
Named after British essayist Thomas Carlyle, this magnificent luxury hotel designed by Bien and Prince, was completed in 1931. From its brilliant location on Madison Avenue, this luxury hotel has dominated the Upper East Side skyline for 70 years offering enviable views of Central Park to its guests. Initially decorated in the Empire manner by Dorothy Draper and updated by the formidable Mark Hampton, the Carlyle maintains a unique, understated elegance and a strong Art Deco influence that has defined New York chic since 1930.
The Carlyle Restaurant is designed in an English-manor-house style and marries luxury with intimacy. The menu, served up by Executive Chef James Sakatos, is a cuisine of classic French influences and the finest regional American ingredients. The night scene at the Cafe Carlyle is known for headlining incredible talents, including Eartha Kitt, Ute Lemper and Woody Allen, who regularly appears to jam with the Eddy Davis New Orleans jazz band.
The rooms
The Carlyle offers 179 spacious guestrooms and suites, each decorated in a refined aristocratic style with original artwork and antiques. Beds are layered with 440-thread-count, custom-designed sheets by Rivolta Carmignani of Milan and down duvets with monogrammed Carlyle covers. Walls are adorned with Audubon prints, 18th-century architectural renderings by Piranesi, or English country scenes by Kips. Flatscreen, high-definition TVs come with DVD players. High-speed Internet access is available for a surcharge. Minibars or pantries are stocked with gourmet foods and drinks. Marble bathrooms include makeup/shaving mirrors, fresh flowers, Kiehl’s products, Frette bathrobes, and slippers.
