  • Cooper Square Hotel

Hotel. 2.0km from central New York.

A 21-storey tower of gleaming glass looming over the Bowery The Cooper Square Hotel stands out dramatically from the neighbouring brick tenements. • The Bowery

    Hotel.

Five years ago no one would have looked to the Bowery for Manhattan's hottest boutique hotel but the one-time skid row has come up trumps with this irrepressible hipster hangout. The Bowery Hotel's light bright bedrooms capture the classic style of New York apartments (complete with moodily lit tiled corridors) and its art-deco-inspired Lobby bar is a homey wood-panelled haven from the unsleeping city.

  • Hotel Grace

    Hotel.

This cheap-chic boutique hotel is just what you'd expect from that most artful of lodgers Andre Balazs. The wood panelling and cubic modern furniture at Hotel Grace have a whisper of chalet about them but you can still sense that you're inches from Times Square in the middle of Manhattan. Though the bedrooms aren't huge (after all this is New York City) the bed is kingsize. In fact half the room is sleepable on. There may not be any bathtub to wallow in but the fact that there's a pool in the lobby is good compensation.

  • Chambers

    Hotel.

Just when you thought you seen most urban design tricks this modernist midtown Manhattan boutique hotel pulls a few surprises out of the bag: concrete in the bathroom unplastered ceiling and exposed pipes for the fire sprinkler and a desk befitting a graphic designer (pot of sharp coloured pencils and a role of tracing paper to doodle on). In contrast the furnishings at Chambersare cosy with a palette of soft aubergine gentle lime green and muted taupe. Heavy suede curtains block out the outside. Industrial lamps match the concrete ceiling for contemporary edge but underfloor heating means that cool urban look never gets chilly.

  • The Bryant Park Hotel

    Hotel.

Overlooking midtown Manhattan's Bryant Park with Times Square but a stroll away the dark masculine Gothic-Revival exterior of this hip hotel gives way to a striking red reception with soothing brown and lilac contemporary bedrooms. There's plenty of modern stuff in The Bryant Park Hotel: plasma TVs a Bose stereo and a SoundDock for your iPods - that should whet your appetite for the crypt-like DJ bar below.

  • 60 Thompson

    Hotel.

The bar and restaurant of 60 Thompson are reason alone to stay here. The front entrance of this contemporary 100-roomed boutique hotel in SoHo glows with numerous shelves of backlit glass jars of orchids. Its rooftop bar A60 is the talk of the town and definitely the place to be during the summer months.

    Hotel.

Cool Britannia in the heart of New York's buzzing Meatpacking District the Manhattan outpost of London media club Soho House New York is the epitome of urban sophistication.
