The oldest city in the Kathmandu Valley, Patan dates back to the 3rd century BC, and is famed chiefly for the vast amount of high-quality art works it has produced. More artisans from Patan achieved global recognition for their skills throughout history than from any other Nepalese city and given the wonderful, unique architectural and artistic range still visible there even today, this comes as no surprise. Its original name was 'Lalitpur', which in fact means 'city of fine arts'.
The Tusha Hiti is arguably the most celebrated of all the masterpieces the city has to offer; it is a square, sunken bath built into the centre of Patan's Durbar Square and would have been used by the kings of the Malla dynasty, who ruled Nepal between the 12th and 17th centuries.
It is decorated with several religious and symbolic stone carvings and bronze sculptures: Images of Hanuman the monkey god and Krishna grace each side, there are eight each of incarnations of Vishnu, Indian Naga kings and mother goddess figures, and the tap is carved in the shape of a conch shell, supporting a small statue of Lakshmi.
