Camp out under the stars with cowboys and witness the Wild West’s awesome and unrivalled scenery

15 days, from £1333 (Group tour). The Adventure Company »

Zinfandel vines dating from the 1920’s are lined up besides Cabernet Sauvignons from the 1960’s and Rhone varieties first tested here in the 90’s make up the wine vista at Paso Robles. In 1989 when the Perrin family, producers of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, founded a winery on the dry hills outside of Adelaide on which to plant grapes for a Chateauneuf style wine the region knew it was being taken seriously. The Perrin influence and pedigree meant that more Rhone varieties were planted, Syrah, Viognier and Roussanne. The Perrin owned vineyard in Paso Robles is Tablas Creek. Other producers based in this region include Justin, Vina Robles and J Lohr for cuvees.

Paso Robles is also home to a top range of small and boutique wineries, which has lead to cellars opening up in town where you can taste wines from a range of local producers. You can still visit the wineries themselves, most run along Highway 46 East or West, but if you don't get to all of them you won't miss out on tasting the wine.

Only about 20 minutes from the ocean or the mountains, Paso Robles is now predominantly a wine town so don’t bring your teetotal friends along hoping they’ll find something to do while you taste.
