On Foot in New Zealand
New Zealand's South Island offers some of the best - and certainly most varied - hiking anywhere in the world. From the golden sands of the Abel ...

Tucked in between high mountains, the cool pebbly plains around Blenheim are where more than half of New Zealand's wine vines are reared, most famously those crisp, lemongrassy, citrus nosed Sauvignon Blancs and smooth Pinot Noirs. The ripening season here is long, sunny and cool and also suits Chardonnay and Riesling grapes which develop a zest to them not common to other regions, from the acid the grapes retain in the cold night air.
Gourmet food to match the world class wines has been the latest addition to Marlborough and several of the 60+ wineries in the region have invested in a restaurant addition to their cellar. The town of Blenheim has been transformed into a mini wine fuelled metropolis as tour companies, grape growers, wineries and hotels and restaurants make their names off the regions famous beverages.
Now synonymous with Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs, Cloudy Bay is probably the region's best known producer internationally, but look out for lesser known premium producers Fromm, Wither Hills and Vavasour and better known popular producers Montana, Jackson Estate and Saint Clair (who make some great Pinot Noirs.). Expect to taste a lot of Sauvignon Blancs.
