See more Wine Regions. See best of Western Australia in Australia.

A new wine growing region by international standards, grapes were only planted along the beautiful coast of Western Australia around Margaret River in the 1960's, when it was discovered the climate and soil were very similar to that of the Burgundy region in France. The then popular big Burgundy like Cabernets proved the most successful grapes, but later stronger flavoured strands of Chardonnays thrived as well, creating a region of bold wines.

Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz grapes are also grown in the Margaret River region with a local Shiraz winning "the best red in the world" at the London International Wine Challenge in 2000.

Margaret River attracts progressive winemakers, the untested nature of the soil and youth of the industry means there is plenty of room for discovery both for win makers and wine tasters, but that said around 20% of Australia's premium wine market now come from Margaret River, so the region's reputation is building.

Of the 120 odd wineries in the Margaret River region, some of the best known include Evans & Tate, Cape Mentelle, Chateau Xanadu and Leeuwin Estate.

As well as producing plenty of great wine in the casual style of the local area, Margaret River's gorgeous coastline and beaches, excellent weather, cool town and great, unpretentious food and drink - up to international gourmet standards but with the laid back attitude of Western Australia mean there is more to enjoy than just sipping. It should also be noted that Margaret River has world class surf and must be one of the few places in the world you can hang ten in the morning, taste wine from the multiple winery cellar doors in the afternoon before a gourmet meal in the evening overlooking spectacular country.
