Wine production has been going on in Andalucia since at least the Roman period and wine has been exported from the region since the 15th Century, most famously its Sherry to England. The only wines now able to be labelled Sherry come from a small triangle of land between Jerez de la Frontera, Puerto de Santa Maria and Sanlucar de Barrameda where the soil is chalky and the climate is right for the yeast which prevents the Palomino grape wine from oxidising during the fermentation process to create Sherry.
The standard fee for touring a winery in or around Jerez de la Frontera is about three euro and most wineries and bodegas are very welcoming to visitors. Some of the best producers are Barbadillo, Domecq and Hidalgo.
The other main production centre in the region is Malaga, also famous for its sweet wines made mostly from Moscatel and Pedro Ximenez grapes.
If you don’t have a sweet tooth when it comes to wine the sunbaked coastline, white washed Moorish architecture, dancing horses, flamenco music and dancing, lone farmhouses set amongst olive groves and orchards and lifestyle of siestas and meals of tapas that go on ‘till midnight may change your mind about visiting Andalucia.
