Sal is a flat, sandy island with plenty of sunny days and prevailing northwest trade winds. The Professional Windsurfers Association held a World Cup event there in February 2007 amongst eight to ten foot surf. As well as big waves, Sal has several speed tracks. One of the longest beaches on Sal is located on the bay of Santa Maria and is 4kms long. This area is flatter near the shore so is good for learners. The best windsurfing is had between October and June because the trade winds are strongest and most consistent.
