See more Walking. See best of North West in United Kingdom.

This is a well known walk which starts in Edale and finishes in Kirk Yetholm, crossing moors, national parks and the Scottish border in the process. It follows in part Hadrian's Wall, which is a bonus if you're walking with history buffs, who will also be interested in several abandoned mines and the home of the Bronte Sisters. It's 430kms of walking and people tend to do it within 16 to 20 days, depending on walking speed and weather. The highest point of the walk is Cross Fell. Other scenic points include the waterfalls on the northern end of the trail. It's a civilised trip with lots of opportunities to stay in B&B's and local Pubs which adds to the character of the journey. Lots of people advise you book your accommodation ahead, because the Way can be busy at unpredictable times. I've done it several times and each time I've made an effort to stay in different places, but I've never been disappointed. I've met some friendly souls on the road and in the pubs and it's a good walk for those who like to meet local people. The trickiest part is gauging the weather which can be rubbish or worse, quickly deteriorate, however that's one of the realities of the area, so the best way to deal with it is to embrace it and pack your gortex. There are lots of enjoyable smaller sections of the trail which can be done in a day or two.
