Do you need to lose yourself for a few days? Obtain one of the few daily permits and set off on a path into this vast mountain wilderness to sleep under the stars wherever you want. Only 300 kms from Cape Town, the Cederberg was one of the last refuges for the stone-age San people in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many rock walls and caves are adorned with their rock art (do not touch!). Map guides are easily obtainable and you can take yourself off to some remote, castellated valleys, high meadows and strange rock formations without seeing another soul for days. The place resounds with evocative names such as Krakadouw, Koerasieberg, Wolfberg – to name but a few. The Cederberg enjoys a Mediterranean climate, but winter can bring extremes of cold and snow, and summers can be very hot. Check the weather forecast as conditions change rapidly.
