‘Fountains of glowing lava bombs’Stromboli is the source of the term “Strombolian eruption,” which denotes an eruption style characterized by frequent minor explosions and fountains of glowing lava bombs. Stromboli has been erupting in this fashion more or less daily for perhaps 2000 years. The summit has recently been off-limits due to unusually violent and unpredictable activity, but when Stromboli is doing its usual thing the summit can be reached after a 3-hour climb and the reward is an unforgettable night of volcanic fireworks, with tall lava fountains from crater 1 happening every 20 minutes or so, with intermittent activity from the other two craters as well. DO NOT approach the active craters; instead view them from the summit viewpoint known as Pizzo, which overlooks the three craters. The volcano rises abruptly from the Mediterranean Sea, with whitewashed fishing villages at its base on the inactive side. The active side includes a massive scarp known as the Sciara del Fuoca (“stream of fire”), which is occasionally traversed by lava flows descending to the sea.

Review by expert member ‘Stromboli’If you are trying to see a volcanic eruption the most reliable volcano is Stromboli, because there are small but dramatic looking eruptions happening several times a day and gas can almost constantly be seen billowing from the crater.
