The active summit crater of Poas is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Costa Rica. You can drive to a viewpoint and visitors center, then follow a trail down to the crater’s edge for a closer look at the boiling green acidic crater lake, which periodically erupts in geyser-like fountains and steam discharges. There are occasional larger eruptions but during such times the summit road is closed.
