Mt. Kaimon, also known as Satsuma-Fuji (“Mt. Fuji of Satsuma”), rises from the sea on the south coast of Kyushu and is renowned for its graceful beauty. Kaimon last erupted in the 17th century. Nearby is the fancy hot spring center of Ibusuki where one can relax in a huge domed enclosure featuring a variety of warm to hot baths, or else get buried in steam-heated volcanic sand on the beach for a natural sauna. Also nearby is the Ikeda crater lake in which supposedly dwells Japan’s version of the Loch Ness Monster.
