Mount Mayon
See more Volcanoes. See best of Legaspi Port in Philippines.

Walking on an active volcano sounds adventurous and Mount Mayon isn’t just active, it’s erupted more than 50 times in the last 500 years and is the most active volcano in the country. Mt. Mayon has the same smooth, regular conical shape as Mt. Fuji. On your way up you can pass by the bell tower of a town that existed at the bottom of the volcano before 1814 since which it has been covered in hardened lava. Eruptions in 1984, 1993 and 2001 lead to evacuations in the surrounding area and in 2006 rock falls, increasing sulfur emissions and spouting lava got people worried that the volcano was swelling to bursting point. You need to be quite fit and experienced with volcanic terrain to summit Mt. Mayon, but if that doesn’t sound like you there is a halfway point that offers great views of the mountain and where you can be impressed by the regularity of Mayon’s slope. Or you can admire it from afar or from the park built around the buried town of Cagsawa.
