Mihara-yama

See more Volcanoes. See best of Kanto in Japan.

Mihara-yama is the famous Japanese volcano that formed the island known as Oshima, accessible by ferry from Tokyo and a popular weekend getaway for Tokyoites. The summit crater has frequently contained an active lava lake, and for this reason Mihara-yama became notorious as a suicide spot, with several suicides per week starting in the 1920s; evidently the complete elimination of any trace of oneself after falling hundreds of meters into molten lava made it appealing to those seeking self-destruction. The crater of Mihara-yama is also a fictional home of Godzilla. The last major eruption was in 1986 and was one of the most spectacular of the 20th century, with lava fountains up to 1600 meters high and 1 kilometer wide. The island's 12,000 inhabitants were evacuated by the Japanese military. Since then the volcano has been mostly quiet except for a brief eruption in 1990, and the lava lake is no more - but will likely return in the future.
