Me-Akan is the most consistently active volcano of Japan's northern island Hokkaido. It recently erupted in 2006 but even between eruptions there is a lot of solfataric activity in Me-Akan's impressive complex of summit craters. The largest crater is constantly fuming and contains weird sulphur chimneys and mud geysers. The summit can be reached via a trail from beautiful Lake Onneto at the base of the volcano. There are fantastic views of central Hokkaido's volcanic landscape from the summit.
