Lonquimay is a very colorful volcano located just north of southern Chile's Lake District. In 1988 Lonquimay gave birth to a new, baby volcano at its eastern foot. This baby was born in December so it came to be called the Crater Navidad (Christmas Crater). In only 4 months of activity it grew several hundred feet in height and poured out a massive amount of lava that completely filled the once-verdant valleys to the west. Navidad is now dormant, but mother and child together present an impressive sight from the volcano road. Adjacent to Lonquimay is the older, highly eroded Volcan Tolhuaca with its small summit glaciers. On a clear day, the usually smoking Llaima volcano can be seen to the south, while to the north the great chain of the Andes can be seen extending for hundreds of kilometers, punctuated by the great glacier-covered volcanoes Copaihue, Callaqui and Sierra Veluda. Andean Condors frequent this remote area.
