Chile's Conquillo National Park is centered on the highly active Volcan Llaima, which erupts every few years and usually emits a towering plume of gas. The dirt road traversing the park is rugged, crossing a vast plain of ash and rock disgorged in the great 1957 eruption. A lasting result of that eruption was the creation of several new lakes in the area due to the natural damming of rivers and streams; the skeletons of dead trees protrude mysteriously from their waters. Llaima can be climbed when it is in a quiet phase. An alternative hike, the Sierra Nevada trail, offers great panoramic views of Llaima; it follows the glacially-eroded rim of an old volcano of which Llaima is the younger offspring. The forest here is dominated by exotic, umbrella-shaped araucania pines, a relic from the days of the dinosaurs.
