‘Legendary lair of the Cyclops’Mt. Etna, the legendary lair of the Cyclops, erupts frequently and spectacularly, with explosive eruptions as well as Hawaiian-style lava flows – a fantastic combination! Etna is rather unpredictable, but rarely does a year pass without any eruptions. In the past decade it has erupted during part of each year, so its activity seems to be increasing. There are multiple summit craters, and eruptions can occur from any of them, in addition to flank eruptions where vents suddenly open up and lava flows out - often into the huge flank caldera known as the Valle de Bove. Skiing is a possibility in mid-winter as long as lava flows are not melting the snow! Of course Sicily offers many other attractions, especially of the historical and gastronomical varieties, so even if Etna isn’t erupting it will be a great trip.

Review by expert member ‘Etna’Mount Etna’s summit changes with each eruptions so it’s a constantly changing and dramatic looking mountain as well as one of the world most active volcanoes. It is also one of the worlds most studied volcanoes. Eruptions of Mount Etna have occurred from several vents on both the sides and mouth of the volcano, a situation which has caused much of Etna’s surface to be covered in hardened lava. It also means that Etna is covered in cinder cones. You can also ski on it in winter!
