Asama is one of the world’s most beautiful volcanoes. Its massive 1783 eruption devastated central Honshu and affected the world’s climate. Asama erupts intermittently and unpredictably every few years, so a climb to its smoking summit (which is technically off-limits, though that doesn’t stop many climbers) always entails risk. The active cone sits within a semicircular caldera, or somma. A climb through verdant forest to the somma rim offers a fabulous view of the incomparably graceful cone of Asama as well as distant views of Mt. Fuji and the Japanese Alps on clear days. The region around Asama offers many attractions, including the famous hot springs where the snow monkeys bathe, an area known as Jigokudani (Hell Valley).
