Mérida Cable car

Starting at out at Merida at 1577m this cable car dangles you precariously up the surrounding mountains to the other end of the line at 4765m, making it the world’s highest cable car. At a journey of 12.5kms it is also the world’s longest. Opened in 1960 to give people easier access to the Sierra Nevada de Merida mountains, four cars, carrying up to 36 passengers each, travel at once balancing each other out along the route at 5metres a second - so it sounds fairly graceful, no? The last section takes you above 4000 metres so be prepared for the cold and high altitude. At the final station there is an excellent view of Pico Bolivar, Venezuela’s highest mountain. There is also, apparently, a cafe selling hot chocolate.
