Meaning ‘sacred deep forest’ in the local Madinka dialect, Makasutu Culture Forest is located about 5km north of Brikama and is a lush green wilderness fed by a tributary of the Mandina Bolon. There are a variety of ecosystems within the Makasutu, savannah, mangroves, a dense mature tropical forest, Guinea woodland and semi-wooded grassland are all represented. Within the reserve there is also a 5* eco-lodge. A trip to the reserve will also reveal the delights of the locals, with Jola traditional tribal dancing, drumming and singing as well as the opportunity to try a traditional Gambian meal at the "Baobab Restaurant & Bar". A private eco-tourist reserve, the forest is open to the public for full or half-day cultural guided eco-tours.
