Translated it’s called the Museum of Art History and is one of the most admired museums to fine and decorative arts in the world comparable to the Louve and the Vatican for its collection of Old Masters. The building is a mirror image of its twin the Naturhistorisches Museum, both of them were built to hold the collected treasures of the Habsburgs and to allow the general public to educate themselves on it as well. This collection is also a reflection of the opulent taste and style of many members of this royal and powerful family.

Among the most famous pieces in the collection are the paintings of the seasons by Arcimboldo, the ones where the produce from each season is arranged to create the profile of a face, and several paintings by Velazquez of the Spanish royal family. The museum also houses works by Rubens, Raphael, Rembrandt, Verneer, Klimt, Titan and Brueghel, of whose works the Kunsthistorisches has the largest collection in the world.

The facades of the two museums face each other in imposing sandstone, but inside they’re marble. The buildings themselves are the main draw for some visitors, they are that decorated with murals, stuccos and gilding.
