Frida Kahlo’s colourful, vibrant stylized self portraits referencing the colours and imagery of Mexican heritage are displayed throughout the world but the house where she lived has been kept as a museum to her. Known as the Blue House this was her parents house as well as belonging to Frida and her mural artist husband Diego Rivera, whose works and personal effects are also on display. The azure walls were built in a U shape around a central courtyard brimming with lush tropical plants. The formal entrance hall where Frida’s famous guests and admirers would have been entertained is filled with her work including several self portraits and paintings of her family and her last painting, titled Viva la Vida, a bright still life of watermelons. The traditional nature of her dress and tastes is obvious in her house, the primary colours and decorations, like papier-mache skeletons, are as much a part of her costume as her long swishy skirts still hanging in her bedroom.
