A castle first stood on the river cliff here in the 11th century, built to guard a crossing point in the Loire, which runs far below. After its owner, Louis d'Amboise, was executed for treason in 1431, the castle fell into royal hands and was expanded in first Gothic and the Renaissance styles by its successive occupants. It became home to a number of famous aristocrats, was involved in the Amboise Conspiracy and is supposedly the burial place of Leonardo da Vinci. It also boasts what is believed to have been the first ever French formal garden, as well as a network of tunnels, a large collection of antiques and fabulous views of the region.
