The Salt Church of Zipaquira is built not out of a giant block of salt but underground amongst the curving, meandering tunnels of a disused salt mine inside a salt mountain. Fourteen small chapels, representing Jesus’ journey to the cross and decorated in carvings, linked by chains of tunnels, some vast and some narrow, lead worshippers to the main cavern. Some of the carved decorations are basic, just crosses cut from the walls or polished sections of salt, while others depict much more complex images - a replication of Michelangelo’s ‘The Creation of Adam’ (also known as the ‘Finger or God’ from the Sistine Chapel.) for example.
