The sport of bull-fighting has drawn much criticism from animal-friendly groups yet still the sport remains popular in Spain and South America. Although, obvious cruelty is sometimes abhorrently on show, bull-fighting is a majestic and skilful art matched only by the intricate and beautiful matador costume. Mexico’s Monumental Plaza is a good place to learn why so many people still adore the matador, as he risks his life in front of a bull that charges like a juggernaut towards him, with only his acrobatic and technical skill separating them. Inside the cauldron of the Plaza, which is the world’s largest bull-fighting stadium housing 41,262 spectators, it isn’t hard to be swept up in the drama that unfolds below the spectators gaze. As well as watching bull fights through the gaps in your fingers, between fights, the crowd comes alive for a different reason – food and drink and festivities. It is the bull-fighting that will be remembered though, the “ole” thrown in the air as the matador’s cape sweeps through the air as the bull charges through and a day at the fights will show you some of the lust and drama of Mexican life.
