Berlin Jewish Museum

See more Visitor Attractions. See best of Berlin in Germany.

The first Jewish Museum in Berlin opened in 1933, before the rise to power of the Nazi party, who promptly closed it on gaining power. The Second World War meant that Jewish history was even more closely intertwined with the history of Berlin as a city, but it wasn’t until 1978 that the Berlin Museum founded a Jewish History exhibition from which this larger collection came.

The zig zagging, lightning strike of a building is right next to the more staid shape of the Berlin Museum on ground that used to be the no man’s land between East and West Germany. It doesn’t have any entrances on ground level, you have to enter it via a tunnel from the Berlin Museum. Two other tunnels lead out of it, one to the Holocaust Tower, an empty 24 metre tall silo, with only a slit opening for lighting or heating.

Inside this emotive building are relics collected from the ghettos, concentration camps and pre and post WWII Jewish German life.
