Abuko nature reserve is the smallest protected area in Gambia but that doesn’t mean that is small on spectacle. It is packed with easily viewed wildlife, including western red colobus and callithrix monkeys, crocodiles, antelopes and spectacular birds and butterflies. The nearest tropical forest to Europe, the Abuko reserve has a nature trail will have you trek across Guinea savannah, where trunks are covered in mud deposited by tree ants. Water lilies cover the Bamboo Pool and foot bridges span the swampy streams before the trail leads you through the lush vegetation, thick jungle, open and bright savannah before depositing you at the animal orphanage.
