Located in the heart of the city and on the longest street in the world lies Church Square, one of the most popular tourist attractions in South Africa. The square was founded in 1855 and was intended to be a place for market and church purposes. It is now a site of historical significance, and also a location where visitors can rest under Jacaranda trees, admire the well-kept gardens, and feed pigeons. A bronze statue of Paul Kruger, one of South Africa's former presidents, and four anonymous Boer citizen-soldiers is in the centre of the square, and several historically significant buildings such as the Palace of Justice, the Tudor Chambers, the Ou Raadsaal, the Old Capitol Theatre, and more, surround it. The Palace of Justice is not only known for its Italian Renaissance architectural style, but also for the Rivonia Trial when Nelson Mandela and other leaders of the African National Congress were charged with treason and incarcerated.
