New Orleans’ Garden District

See more Squares, Streets & Urban Spaces. See best of New Orleans in United States.

The nouveau riche of 1850’s New Orleans built their mansions, tokens of their exotic tastes or their traditional values in the Garden District. Walking along the streets you’ll see everything from imitation British baronial seats to pillared Greek Revival properties to Italianate architecture and miniature Versailles. The slave trade, cotton plantations and the port made many men looking for opportunity post Louisiana purchase, but the Creole residents of the French Quarter didn’t offer the welcome they have since been known for and new houses were built in this leafy area, once just out of the city.
