Marvel at the treasures of the Hermitage, Relive Russian history in the country's oldest city, ...

14 days, from £960 (Group tour). Intrepid Travel »

If you've been to St. Petersburg but never walked down Nevsky Prospekt, then you must not have left your hotel. The city was basically built around this long street and all the main tourist attractions, shopping, and eating opportunities are right here. Nevsky Prospekt cuts through the most historic part of town and is thus the reason that impressive sights like the Kazan Cathedral, Church of our Savior on Spilled Blood and the Arts Square and the Russian Museum all stand tall here.

However, there is more to do if sightseeing and taking pictures aren't really your thing (but let's just say.. shopping is.) You can spend hours exploring Gostiny Dvor- the largest department store in the city. It is so big that it is gradually being turned into a mall and other, smaller shops are beginning to rent out space within this building that takes up an entire city block on Nevsky Prospekt. The other mall, Grand Palace, can entertain you for a few more hours with shops such as Escada and Trussardi.

Other popular stores include the Dom Knigi bookstore- recognizable because of the large, glass globe that sits atop it, and the architecturally beautiful Yeliseev’s Store with their yummy confections and treats. The rest of the shops are similar to those you'd find on Oxford Street or Champs Elysees- lots of international designers with a few, if any, local brands.
