Ulpotha
See more Unusual Places to Stay. See best of Colombo-West in Sri Lanka.
‘Ulpotha Retreat’Legend has it that the seven hills of Ulpotha were recognised centuries ago by Buddhist monks as a sacred place where gods walked the earth, and they settled there and built a shrine, which drew pilgrims from miles around. The spirituality of Ulpotha’s history, legends and unspoiled nature still infuses the village as it stands today, since its restoration and reforestation has been carried out solely with the use of traditional means.
The thatch-roofed huts, sand pathways, coconut and fruit orchards and organic farmland that comprise this little paradise blend in perfectly with the magical Sri Lankan lakes, forests and mountains. Days can be filled with yoga classes, Ayurvedic consultations and tailored treatments and massages (which are free during your stay), swimming in the lake and lunching in the open-air dining room on fresh curries, fruits and salads. If the warm evening tempts you out to listen to the frogs singing and watch the sun set over the hills, you can even stay out all night in one of the secret hideaways and wake up with the dawn.
