Five Star Otocec castle is the kind of place you hear about in fairytales. Situated in Dolenjska, on an island in the Krka river, access to the castle is limited by a wooden bridge giving you a sense that you’re really travelling away from the modern world, yet, Llubjana, a large city is only about an hours drive away.
Most of the bedrooms have been recently refurbished although some are more luxurious than others, with HUGE bathrooms and beds. Period furniture successfully transports you back to the past, yet modern amenities, such as telephone and satellite television, are also available.
You can arrange for breakfast to be served to your room, and it really is a sumptuous feast (croissants, fruit, bread, yoghurts, tea, juice…). Dinner is just as yummy. The restaurant is a treat and provides 4 course menus, with waiters maintaining the authenticity by dressing in medieval costumes – they looked fantastic! The service was a little slow, and the set menu quite plain, yet the setting gives it an edge over other restaurants.
At night the courtyard is lit by torches and candles and is very romantic. Tasteful entertainment is often provided in the form of musicians, and Otocec castle is a popular wedding reception venue, which adds to the atmosphere, yet it can get quite noisy.
Guests can take full advantage of the facilities in the nearby Sports Hotel, which includes a sauna, gym, internet access and even a casino. The grounds of the castle are beautiful and include a river where guests are able to fish and row boats. And if you can’t quite afford the luxury of the castle, or just want to feel closer to nature, there is a small camp site close by, which has basic facilities.
Overall, Otocec castle is a great place to stay if you want to feel like aristocracy (many families of Slovenian nobility have stayed there in the past), if you’re looking for romance or just want to be transported back to the medieval period. Embrace your imagination and escape for a while.
