The Woodpecker Hotel is perched in a 130 year old Oak tree, thirteen metres above the ground with only a wobbly rope ladder for access. This of course rules out big suitcases and vertigo sufferers. However without all the clutter of a normal trip you can better appreciate the amazing views that the tiny tree-house hotel offers across the Vasteras national park and Lake Malaren near Stockholm.
The hotel was originally designed by Mikael Genberg as a free place to rest tired limbs, but the hotel’s compact kitchen, bedroom, terrace and library proved so popular that to calm the charging hoards of guests, he started charging.
Despite the remote location, the faint noise of the city centre roads is the inescapable backing track to the hotel’s evenings-in - to avoid any more noise switch off your mobile phone; reception is crystal clear at that altitude and anyone will be able to get hold of you.
