The town White Cliffs was the first commercial Opal field in Australia founded in the late 19th century. At the time of the first settlers, building materials were scarce and summers were hot, so the miners began to convert their old mine shafts into residences which stayed a constant temperature, staying cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The town grew and today it is a true iceberg town with at least four times as much construction below the earth surface as above. PJ’s is one of these renovated mines where you can get a taste of the pioneering spirit for a couple of nights. The rooms are converted mines but have extra touches such as carved bookcases and small windows. Despite the modern renovation, the underground plumbing remains rather ancient and so toilets and showers are communal.
