This 1650 square foot cave bed and breakfast somewhat resembles the evil lair of a James Bond enemy, hidden away in the mountainside for maximum secrecy but at the same time having everything you would expect in an ordinary house. But of course, Kokopelli’s Cave is far from ordinary. Chiselled out of 65 million-year-old sandstone and situated 280 feet above the La Plata River, the flat surface of the semi-circle shaped room consists of two glass sliding doors that open onto views across the valley. The cave was originally built for geologist Bruce Black in the 1980s and therefore has a full kitchen, running water, a television, a washing machine and dryer and more recently added; a Jacuzzi. It is certainly a bit of an effort to get to the cave but it should all seem worth it when you’re sitting on the balcony at sunset, watching golden eagles soar above you and keeping watch for the ring-tailed cats that tend to wander onto the balcony as if it was just part of their cliff-face.
