Every year, the Jukkasjarvi Icehotel melts to nothing and becomes part of the crashing, icy torrent that is the Torne river, running out to the summer sea under the midnight sun. And every autumn, it rises from the riverbank again - a veritable palace of chilling, translucent beauty, carved from the frozen river water and endowed with every luxury that can possibly be constructed from ice, and reassuringly, all the others as well. The Torne River water is particularly pure and as a result, its ice plays with light like crystal, showering the rooms in fragmented sunlight. The layout, architecture and interior design varies between years, and the rooms full of rococo carvings, high-backed ice chairs, vaulted ceilings, blue-lit ice slab coffee tables and pedestal beds draped in reindeer skins make the hotel an ephemeral but monumental work of art.
