See more Trekking. See best of Scotland in United Kingdom.

The Outer Hebrides are not as far away as you think! From Inverness, which is easy to reach from any part of the UK, it is just a 1 hour transfer to Ullapool from where you take a ferry to the islands. But once you arrive - you'll be a world away!

The trekking here is superb. With a huge variety of trekking routes available, there is something for everyone. The islands have the best beaches in Scotland, stunning coastal walks and beautiful mountains and glens to explore. Best of all, you almost always are alone while out hiking, so it feels like a real wilderness. This is reflected in how easy it is to spot wildlife - I've yet to visit the Isle of Harris and not see at least one golden eagle!

Away from the mountains, there are many fascinating historical sites to visit, most famously the standing stones at Callanish, which are older than those at Stonehenge.

If you enjoy hiking, perhaps combining it with some culture, and generally experiencing a relaxed, unhurried and traditional lifestyle, then the Outer Hebrides should be high on your list of places to visit. And once you've been, it'll be high on your list of places to return to!
