For trekkers who enjoy exploring wild and remote places, the Knoydart peninsula on Scotland provides wilderness, a fascinating history and a great pub!
Knoydart is unusual as it is part of the Scottish mainland but can only be accessed from the sea. There is a small village of 100 locals and Scotland's most remote pub, but the road coming through the village ends a couple of miles later as steep mountains rise up on all sides.
We chartered a boat from a local to take us round to a remote lodge located on a little beach with views across the sea to Skye. From here, we were able to enjoy some superb hikes, with regular sightings of Golden Eagles, red deer and lots of other wildlife. What we didn't see was any other hikers. This is the beauty of Knoydart - its inaccessability means that very few people travel there and experience its wild beauty and timeless charm.
For those that do visit, however, they soon realise that Knoydart is probably the best place for genuine wilderness hikes in the British Isles. It's highly recommended to go with a local guide, even if you are relatively experienced, as they will enlighten you with tales from the fascinating local history.
