The Kingdom of Mustang is a semi-autonomous kingdom lying in the region east of Dolpo. The region is an arid and mountainous desert once habituated by cave dwelling hermits. This area is unique because it’s Tibetan Buddhist heritage has been well preserved. It was only opened up in the 1990’s, so before that the people had had very few visitors. The route passes salt mines and many villages and the city, Lo Manthang, unusual because it is a square walled city, inside of which there is still a palace and a king.
