Sikkim: Kanchenjunga Goechela Trek
Wedged between Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal, Sikkim is still considered ‘Shangri-La' by many of those who have ventured to its remoteness, spectacular mountain terrain, exotic flora and fauna, fascinating old monasteries and the exotic cultural lifestyle .
|
Sikkim is India's smallest state, but one of the most diverse; its section of the Himalayas reach to 8585 metres above sea level, peaking at the Khangchendzonga, the world's third highest mountain, and regarded as Sikkim's guardian spirit.
Sikkim is also the most sparsely-populated Indian state, but its lack of large-scale or heavy industry and less-than-functional infrastructure is amply compensated for by a vast range of prime natural habitat, and the incredible range of biodiversity it hosts. Most commercial production is agricultural, and the fertile, sloping land is perfect for the farming of ginger, fruit, tea and cardamom, which it produces in abundance.
To see the wonderful landscape, meet the unique population (originating from Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan) and of course have a chance to spot the incomparable flora and fauna, trekking is your best bet. Look out for orchids, rhododendrons, red pandas, blood pheasants, blue sheep, and even the elusive snow leopard.
