Mera Peak
An exciting, scenically stunning mountain, that provides a superb challenge for the keen trekker.
|
At 6476 metres Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal. It is not technically difficult and anyone with minimal skills with crampons and an ice axe can tackle this mountain with, weather permitting, a good chance of success. From the summit on a clear day it is possible to see the 8000m peaks of Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga and Cho Oyu. Treks normally begin and terminate at Lukla and to reach this it is normal to fly- an experience in itself, especially the landing! The trek takes just over 3 weeks (door to door) but it is often combined with an ascent of Island Peak which adds an extra week to the itinerary.
If you get the opportunity to cross the Zatra La on your way to or from the mountain it should not be missed, I found it one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey. As for the people they are probably the most hospitable I have ever met.
