As an alternative to the traditional and very crowded Inca Trail, you can trek the Salcantay route from Mollepata to Aguas Calientes, along the Vilcabamba mountain range. This route has been recently equipped with first class mountain lodges, a larger one at Salcantay Base, and three smaller ones along the way, to cater to the sophisticated trekker who enjoys and active day and a comfortable night. This 4-day trek can be extended by one day at Salcantay Lodge for better acclimatization. At the end, from the village below Machu Picchu, a short bus ride takes you to the most iconic ruins of the Inca civilization. Most trekkers would enjoy a few days exploring the Sacred Valley and the magnificent town of Cusco either before or after the hike. The best months for this trek are June to October, during the dry winter months of the southern hemisphere.
